Calls for law changes over missing persons

The Law Reform Commission is calling for changes to help lessen the trauma and financial difficulty on the families of missing persons.

It wants to enable families to apply for a court order declaring a relative ‘presumed dead’ before the usual 7 years missing – and also granting families access to a missing person’s bank account.

The Law Reform Commission says the changes are urgently needed to help families deal with the emotional trauma of their loved one going missing.

The Commission’s Marie Baker says the current laws aren’t good enough:
