Calls for legal changes to rates to help struggling Clare businesses

The government’s being urged to enact legislation that would ease the rates burden on vulnerable and start up business across County Clare.

Prior to December’s budget meeting businesses in the county had lobbied the local authority to cut rates for struggling traders in an effort to sustain employment and boost economic output.

However they were informed that under the current legislation – any rates reduction for one company would have to be applied across the board and that this would give an unfair advantage to the larger businesses.

But North Clare Fine Gael Councillor Joe Arkins believes a slight change to the Rates Act could make a huge difference to struggling firms here
