Calls for reduction in alcohol tax

It's claimed Clare drinkers are spending 30 million more in taxes on alcohol than if they were living in Germany.

The Vintners Federation of Ireland says the average adult here drinks just under 12 litres of alcohol each year, and that this would cost 800 euro less if they swapped the Banner for Berlin.

The industry is said to employ 3,000 people throughout the county, and argues that high prices are keeping people at home, and hurting business.

Spokesperson Bart Storan says a reduction in excise duty would have a significant impact.
