Calls For Rural Affairs To Be Placed At Centre Of Government Negotiations

The Inagh based head of Muintir Na Tire is calling for rural Ireland to be put at the centre of any talks on the formation of the new government.

It comes as the 32nd Dail is to meet for the first time tomorrow, when a vote will be held on who will be next Taoiseach.

With negotiations set to continue into next week on who will form the next government, Muintir Na Tire are encouraging all parties and TDs to keep rural Ireland on the agenda.

CEO Niall Garvey says successive administrations have failed to outline and implement a coherent strategy to deal with social and economic issues in areas like Co. Clare.

The outgoing Government launched a Charter for Rural Ireland in its last week in office which set out a committment to assessing the impact of all policy decisions on rural areas.

Mr, Garvey says, while this is a positive step, the recommendations of the charter need to be implemented quickly by the new government and a specialised Minister of Rural Development is also required.

Meanwhile the Independent Alliance says the group will put forward a nominee for Taoiseach.

Enda Kenny Micheal Martin and Gerry Adams, will also put their names to a vote, however nobody is expected to be elected.

It's also now claimed water charges will NOT be scrapped and Irish Water isn't going to be abolished.

That's according to Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney, who says his comments on the charge last week were misconstrued.

The Minister says Fine Gael won't compromise on it's core principles during negotiations to form a government.

Simon Coveney says Irish Water is one of them.

One of the candidates for the role of Ceann Comhairle in the new Dáil says it would be a good thing to have an Independent and a woman in the role.

Dublin Central TD Maureen O'Sullivan is emerging as the favourite for the job.

Traditionally it's been the Taoiseach's responsibility to appoint a the Chair, but for the first time ever the job will be filled through a secret ballot.

Nominations close at 6 this evening with 5 names in the hat so far
