Sexual Abuse support groups have called for training to be introduced in the judicial system following the early release of a man convicted of a violent gang rape in Clare 6 years ago.

The director of One in Four, Maeve Lewis has said that there is no consistency in sentencing people convicted of crimes of rape and sexual abuse.

Darragh Ryan was convicted along with 4 others of the attack in Cratloe Woods during which a 35 year old woman was raped and her companion was locked in the boot of the car in 2003

Three of the attackers were 16 at the time of the attack; while one was 14 and a fifth man was 24.

All five men are from Limerick and were convicted in 2004 of the attack.

Darragh Ryan, one of the men convicted, was released early from prison recently and his release has led to calls from support groups for training across the judicial system.

The support group, One in Four says that there is inconsistency in sentencing for these types of crimes across the system and Judges should be offered training to understand the nature of sexual violence.

A spokeswoman for the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre said that it was imperative in crimes like this that a pre release assessment was completed and post release supervision was also put in place.
