Central Criminal Court revokes bail for sex offender Patrick O’Brien

Child rapist Patrick O’Brien has had his bail revoked and will now begin serving a 3 year jail sentence for abusing his daughter.

Mr Justice Paul Carney revoked bail saying he has no difficulty accepting that releasing Patrick O’Brien was inappropriate, insensitive and something he shouldn’t have done.

He also said he has no hesitation expressing his profound regret to to the 72 year old’s daughter and victim Fiona Doyle who is now urging her very ill father to let the case lie:

Mr Justice Carney u-turn came about when the DPP challenged the jurisdiction of the court to grant bail ahead of an appeal – when at the moment no such appeal has been set in motion.

He said he was anxious for other judges – namely the court of criminal appeal to get involved but now accepts the sentence was dealt with in a procedural manner which was confusing.

Patrick O’Brien’s will now begin serving his 3 year jail sentence

Reacting to Mr Justice Paul Carney’s decision to revoke Patrick O’Brien’s bail, the Minister for Justice said he understands why people were disturbed by the circumstances of the case.

Alan Shatter said it would be inappropriate for him to comment on a case that is still before the courts but he welcomes the fact that the Taoiseach has agreed to meet with Fiona Doyle:
