Councillors passed the document last evening, with a number of amendments which were recommended by the Council Executive.

The new County Development Plan outlines a strategy for job creation, innovation, economic growth, and balanced development in Clare between now at 2022.

The document, which came about following 2 years of consultations with members of the public and other interested parties, was given the final go-ahead after the discussion of number of proposed changes.

Chair of Clare's Planning Policy Committee, Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn says, while the plan is not without its faults, its something the elected members can stand over.

One of the more controversial changes to the strategy was the decision to remove a proposal to zone NAMA-owned land at Blackwater, Ardnacrusha for low density residential use.

It was argued that the land could be used to tackle housing shortages in South East Clare, however Councillors voted against including it.

Sixmilebridge Independent Councillor PJ Ryan thinks that was a missed opportunity.

However, Meelick Fianna Fail Councillor Cathal Crowe is welcoming the decision.

He claims residents in the area are completely opposed the building of houses on the site in question.
