A Clare representative for older people insists that choice must be at the core of any proposals on housing for the elderly.
The Government is considering offering tax breaks and grants to facilitate older people to downsize their homes, as part of the Housing For All plan.
Research shows 15 per cent of older people would move to a smaller home, if they could do so within their existing community.
Past President of Active Retirement Ireland and Shannon member Kay Murphy says it could pit older people against younger generations as there isn’t enough housing for all familes.
She says it’s also vital that people aren’t being forced from their family homes because of the incentives.
