Christy Curtin elected new Mayor of Clare

The New Mayor of Clare is vowing to put pressure on the government to increase the local authority’s funding allocations as currently the burden is falling unfairly on the rate payer.

Kilrush Independent Councillor Christy Curtin was unanimously elected as "meara" at Aras Chontae an Chlair yesterday afternoon, taking over the mayoral chains from Shannon’s Tony Mulcahy.

The honour comes after 31 years of service on Clare County Council and the Chairman says he’s humbled but apreciative of the role and will work impartially and decisively with his colleagues.

However he warned that tough challenges lie ahead, that monies from government never matched up to the development of the county and this had to change

Meanwhile

Fianna Fail’s Crusheen Councillor Michael Kelly was elected uncontested to the role of Leas Chairman for County Clare- replacing Ennis Clr Tommy Brennan.

Elsewhere and Kilkee have elected a new "Meara Baile".

Fine Gael’s Brian Keane, who was the outgoing deputy mayor to Lilly Marrinan-Sullivan now takes up the mayor chains himself for the forthcoming year.
