The Irish Times reports that 366 people died in 326 fires across Ireland between 2005 and 2014.

In more than half of these cases, the cause of the fire is unknown, however in 158 instances, where the cause IS known, a quarter were caused by cigarettes.

18 per cent were suspected to be electrical appliances which started the fires, while 3 per cent were caused by electric blankets.
