Claims Double The Bed Capacity Needed To Cope With Record Overcrowding At UHL

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation claims the region’s main hospital would need to double in size to cope with the record breaking levels of overcrowding witnessed there in the past month.

The INMO’s latest analysis shows over one thousand patients were left waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick in March, a rise of 46% on the same month last year.

The UL Hospitals Group has apologised to patients suffering long waits and is reassuring that they’re working to alleviate the situation, while they’re urging people to save the ED for emergencies only.

Ennis General Hospital has also seen a rise in trolley numbers this month and the INMO’s Midwest Representative, Mary Fogarty has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that nurses remain hopeful the situation will improve:
