Claims Lack Of Facilities At Midwest Hospital Adding To Trauma Of Miscarriages

It's claimed that a lack of facilities for women who suffer a miscarriage at the MidWest's maternity hospital is adding to the trauma of parents.

It comes as UL Hospital Groups says it's looking for funding to build a new unit at the Ennis Road site

Nearly 5,000 children a year are born at University Maternity Hospital Limerick, which is around 50 years old.

A new maternity hospital is due to be built adjacent to the main hospital in Dooradoyle in the coming years, but in the interim a group has been formed to seek better for services for parents who lost their baby.

The Midwest Miscarriage Support group wants a dedicated baby loss unit at the Ennis Road site.

The Group's founder Pauline Gannon, who herself lost four babies, told Clare FM's Morning Focus why she is dedicating her time to this issue.

The UL Hospital's Group has acknowledged the difficulties facing women who experience miscarriages.

They've sought 800,000 euro in funding to construct a building to house an Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, saying it would have a separate entrance and waiting area, as well as extended operating times.

Pauline Gannon says that while any improvement would be welcome, this is not enough.
