Clare Businesses Back Calls for 9% VAT Rate to be Ringfenced

A North Clare Restauranteur is warning the government tourist numbers will decline if the special rate of vat for the sector isn't maintained. 

The Restaurants Association of Ireland and Fáilte Ireland say over 30,000 jobs have been created as a direct result of the 9 per cent rate.

Hoteliers and those involved in the food and tourism industries are calling for the the special rate – which was introduced in 2011 – to be ringfenced for the hospitality sector. 

Aidan McGrath of the Wild Honey Inn in Lisdoonvarna says the country will be hit hard if the rate disappears and tourists begin to see Ireland as too expensive to visit.
