Business closures and further job losses are being forecast unless rates are reduced for struggling Clare businesses.
Clare County Council has been asked to consider a commercial rates waiver for struggling local businesses particularly those in the hospitality sector in line with their reduced income due to declining tourist numbers.
The Clare County Manager has said the council itself is like a business and the proper running of the county is dependent on rates, warning that public services like fire stations and road projects would be cut if rates are reduced.
But Sixmilebridge Councillor PJ Ryan said many businesses have told him they may need to cut staff due to rate bills they’re struggling to pay.
