Clare Communities To Develop Plan For Refugee Integration

Communities in Clare are being urged to come together to develop with a permanent solution for the thousands of migrants coming here.

It follows comments by Pope Francis who's called on every European parish and religious community to take in one refugee family each in a gesture of solidarity.

More than eighteen thousand migrants travelled over the Hungarian border, enroute to Germany over the weekend, in what's being described as the biggest mass-migration since the last world war.

Tánaiste Joan Burton says Ireland could now accept up to five thousand refugees, claiming there's no "upper limit" on the number of people we can take in.

The issue was discussed at masses in Sixmilebridge yesterday and two groups, the Parish Council and the Meaning Of Life group will meet on Wednesday to come up with a community plan for those coming here.

Fr Harry Bohan is echoing Pope Francis' call for communities to take people in, but he says the provision of housing alone isn't enough. 

The Administrator of the Killaloe Diocese, Fr Des Hillary says a considerable number of people have been approaching him offering to help in any way they can.

But he believes its important to deal with the root cause of the problem rather the providing a temporary fix.

Meanwhile, The French President has committed to accepting 24 thousand refugees and is preparing to begin surveillance flights over Syria.

Francois Hollande says the flights over IS-controlled parts of Syria will begin as early as tomorrow, and will inform his decision on whether to launch air strikes against Islamic State.

President Hollande wants all EU countries to take a quota of migrants – as does Germany.
