Clare Community Wind farms gets green light

Plans for Ireland’s largest community wind farm development between Ennis and Miltown Malbay have been given the go ahead by an Bord Pleanala despite a number of objections.

West Clare Renewable Energy have been given permission to construct 29 turbines in the Mount Callan area – one more than the number originally granted by Clare County Council- after the planning appeals board approved the proposal following objections from local landowners and An Taisce among others.

The company includes 30 local farm families who hope to benefit from a long term source of income through the generation of wind energy and the developers say that up to 300 jobs could be created during construction which could begin by mid 2012.

Chairman of West Clare Renewable energy Padraig Howard accepts that some people in the Mount Callan area are still against the wind farm but says the major project will be good for the county
