Clare could benefit from Lough Derg water extraction plan

Plans to supply Dublin and the East of the country with water from Lough Derg could result in significant gains for County Clare, depending on the case made by local authorities in the affected areas around the lower Shannon region.

Dublin City Council outlined its proposal to extract water from Lough Derg to Clare County Council’s environment committee last evening, insisting there would be no negative impact for East Clare or the local water supply.

The proposal to find a much needed new water supply for the East of the Country will cost over 500 million euro and could create over 1,000 jobs, but Clare Councillors have questioned what good it will do for the mid-west.

Project manager Gerry Geoghan of RPS Consultants, says it’s not for Dublin City Council to offer incentives to those affected in Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary, but they can make a case for community gain to An Bord Pleanala
