The controversial route has been included in Clare's Draft County Development Plan for 2017 to 2023, which is the first to be drawn up since the new municipal structure was created last year.

A public consultation process is ongoing until the end of February and members of the public are being invited to make submissions.

Opponents of the planned route are now calling for plans to be scrapped in light of flooding in the Springfield area of Clonlara saying the proposed route is currently under water.

Chairman of the Northern Distributor Concerned Residents group Ed English says previous reassurances on flooding now appear to have been rubbished.

Meelick Councillor Cathal Crowe says there's no disputing the concept of the Limerick Northern Distributor Road or the economic need for it but he says the current route line couldn't be more offensive to local communities.

Councillor Crowe hopes plans for the South East Clare Road will be revisited in January and he says he'll vote against the entire County Develpment plan if it comes to it.
