Clare Councillors have expressed concern that a planning regulation making it difficult to build on sites with heavy soils is descimating communities.
Under national guidelines, Clare County Council cannot grant planning permission for a development which includes an onsite wastewater treatment system if there is a doubt that soils are unsuitable.

However, with around 40% of Clare classified as having gley non-permeable type soils, it’s feared this makes it virtually impossible to build homes in many parts of Clare.
