Clare County Council Raises Concerns Over Flood Study Findings

Clare County Council has raised concerns with the findings of a major national study on flooding.

The Council says it opposes the findings of the CFRAM report in relation to Springfield, Clonlara and raises concern with regards to Ennis, Shannon, Bunratty and Sixmilebridge.

The CFRAM study commenced in 2011 and is a central plank of Ireland's long-term flood protection strategy.

It examined the flood risk in ten different Clare communities and outlined suggested measures for each area.

Now, Clare County Council has submitted a response to its draft report and in it, the local authority says it opposes the plans for Springfield, Clonlara.

The Council believes CFRAM has under-estimated the extent of potential flooding there, rendering its analysis inaccurate.

On the basis of this analysis, CFRAM decided that the cost of works at Springfield would not be warranted but the Council believes this may not be the case if more accurate data was used.

It's seeking OPW funding to carry out a fresh feasibility study in the area.

Springfield residents have also made a submission on the issue to OPW.

CFRAM also looked at Shannon Airport and Shannon Town – the Council wants them to be considered together, saying the flood risks at both sites can't be considered in isolation.

In Ennis and Sixmilebridge, the local authority is concered that some at-risk areas are not covered by the CFRAM schemes and in Bunratty it's calling for an assessment of existing embankments.
