Clare Dog Walkers Warned Not to Fall Foul of Beach Anti Litter Laws

A new tannoy system is being installed at Lahinch and Kilkee beaches to ask visitors to clean up after their dogs.

It's part of a new awareness campaign and also welcomes people to the beach and asks them not to litter.

It comes as the local authority moves to remind visitors of rules for the use of beaches in Clare.

This new audio alert system is being installed in a bid to curb the level of dog feceas being left on beaches at Kilkee and Lahinch.

The longstanding issue is of concern to the local authority as it can have serious consequences for water quality and parents of young children who may pick it up.

Administrative Officer in the Environment section of Clare County Council – Mary Skehan says they're hopeful it'll be very effective.

It's devised by  NUI Maynooth based company Riteview Solutions and is already installed on either side of the River Shannon in Limerick City.

The company says it expects the system to be up and running in Lahinch and Kilkee in the next week and will then turn its attention to installing the system at bottlebanks around the county.

Elsewhere, work is underway to install a temporary fix on signage at Doughmore beach

The signs have been damaged recently and now show a previously blacked out section which prohibits Dogs and Horses on the beach,.

However Doughmore is not subject to the 2008 bye laws which ban the animals during certain times of the year.

Historically it is an area popular with animal lovers as a walking an exercising area while surfers also enjoy the area.

The Byelaws regarding the presence of animals on beaches remain in place until the end of the summer – while visitors to Kilkee and Lahinch can expected to be greeted by the new tannoy system from next week.
