Clare Firm Calls on Government to Tackle Negativity Around JobBridge

A prominent Shannon Company is criticising the Government for not doing more to combat negative publicity around the JobBridge scheme.

New figures show over 800 people have taken part in the placement programme in Clare since 2011, however just 28 per cent of those have received full time work as a direct result of it.

Hi Life in Shannon has moved to advocate for JobBridge and says the impact it is having on the local economy is not being recognised.

Over the four years since JobBridge was created the scheme has come in for severe criticism from a variety of quarters.

In Clare 814 people who had been out of work have taken part in the internship programme since 2011.

Hi Life in Shannon is one of a number of companies who have used to the scheme to add to their workforce.

HR Manager Elaine Hartigan says they've hired a number of people on the back of it, but she says the negative publicity around needs to be tackled on a Government level.

The coalition has announced plans to review the progress of the scheme this year.

In Clare of those who participated 28 per cent were offered immediate full-time employment after it finished.

While a higher proportion, 44%, did not finish their placements at all.

The Junior Minister at the Department of Social Protection is defending the scheme.

Kevin Humphries admits an overall review is needed.
