Clare Gardaí Disappointed at Rise in Road Fatalities

Clare Gardaí are encouraging the county's drivers to abide by the rules of the road in 2015.

New figures released today by the Road Safety Authority show the death toll from road fatalities has increased again.

A total of 196 people lost their lives on the nation's roads in 2014, compared to 190 in 2013, a rise of 3 percent. 

Of those four people lost their lives in 2014 on the roads in Clare, up from two in 2013. 
 
There was a significant rise in the number of Pedestrian and cyclist fatalities.
 
The report also reveals 26% of car passengers killed, were not wearing a seatbelt.
 
There was a doubling in the number of fatalities among children. 

16 children lost their lives last year – eight were pedestrians and eight were passengers.

 Superintendent Derek Smart of Ennis Garda Station is warning that officers will be out and about throughout the county, ensuring that people stay safe.
