Officers from Henry Street were on patrol in Limerick City at around 6.30  when they spotted a woman enter the water just off the Dock Road.

Garda Joe Hayes  who’s the goalkeeper for the Clare Senior Football Team- and based at Henry Street Garda Station then dived into the Shannon to assist the 22 year old.

The pair were then helped from the water by other members of the force and the 22 year old was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital for treatment but didn’t suffer any serious injuries.

Inspector John O’Reilly has commended the actions of the officers involved, especially Lissycasey native Garda Joe Hayes who he said went above and beyond the call of duty.
