Clare GP Calls For More Resources As Free GP Care For Over 70s Kicks In

A Clare GP says more resources need to be transferred into general practise and community care to meet demand.

It follows the introduction of free GP care for over-seventies which kicks in today.

40,000 people over the age of seventy will benefit from the scheme, regardless of their income.

You'll be able to visit your doctor for free from next Wednesday but to avail of the scheme, you must register online at gpvisitcard.ie or with your local healthcare provider.

The Minister for Older People believes those with medical needs are now being treated better by the system.

Kathleen Lynch says this introduction is another step towards fulfilling the Programme for Government.

Campaigners for the elderly have welcomed the extension of free GP care to include over 70s.

But the Vice-President of Active Retirement Ireland, Kay Murphy from Shannon says older people still face huge prescription bills.

Lahinch GP Dr Michael Kelleher says its a welcome annoucement but believes the Government now needs to increase its health spend to meet demand.
