The body's been responding to a national census by SAFE Ireland to assess the level of pressure on domestic violence support services across the country.

It's encouraging the govenment to tackle with urgency.

Safe Ireland says if the government doesn't do something radical to address domestic violence in Ireland – it'll be apologising for it in years to come.

The charity which provides help to sufferers of domestic violence has published census figures on the women and children who access their services on a single day last year.

Safe Ireland wants the government to address the issue urgently – and expand housing laws to recognise victims of domestic violence.

CEO of Safe Ireland – Ennis native – Sharon O'Halloran says the figures from one single day – November 13th last, prove how stark the problem is.

Clare Haven's Denise Dunne says the survey's findings are replicated in this county year round.

They helped just over 500 people but Ms Dunne says there were many more that required assistance.
