Fear has been expressed in Clare that the reported number of racist incidents doesn’t reflect the full extent of the issue on the ground.
A new report from the European Network Against Racism shows that there was a 33 percent rise in such incidents in the first half of 2017.
Of the 330 recorded, a third were reports of hate speech online – while there were 19 cases of assault.
Orla Ní Éilí from the Clare Immigrant Support Centre has been telling me that it’s worrying – but may actually be a deeper problem than we realise.
