Clare man charged with 1982 bombing

A County Clare man has appeared at the Old Bailey in London charged with the murder of four British soliders in the 1982 Hyde Park IRA bomb blast.

61 year old John Downey with an address in Donegal but originally from Saint Joseph’s Terrace in  Kilrush was arrested at Gatwick Airport on Sunday.

John Downey is charged with four counts of murder and one charge of intending to cause an explosion likely to endanger life in the Hyde Park bombing of July 1982.

The 61 year old with an address at Ards, Creeslough, Co Donegal but originally from Saint Joseph’s Terrace in Kilrush is accused of being responsible for a car bomb left in South Carrige Drive that killed the soliders as they rode through Hyde Park to the changing of the guards

Four men and seven horses were killed in the incident and a number of police officers and civilians were also injured

Today the accused appeared on videolink at the Old Bailey from Belmash Prison.

He was remanded to a preliminary hearing  on 5 June and no bail application was made.
