The 77 year old, who served in Kilmaley and Killimer Knockerra, stepped down from active ministry in 2002 on foot of abuse allegations relating to when he was a Christian brother in the South East.

Known as Brother Cornelius – Con Desmond  was working as principal of Saint Stephen’s De La Salle National School in Waterford when he abused the pupil in his office on a number of occasions between 1977 and 1980.

The young boy was aged between 8 and 10 years at the time.

Following the 77 year old’s five day trial in January the jury of seven women and five men returned majority 10-2 guilty verdicts on all 13 charges of indecent assault..

Judge Donagh McDonagh remanded Con Desmond in custody until today’s sentencing due to the serious nature of the offences, and  evidence that he previously received a suspended sentence for a similar offence in Waterford.
