Clare primary school receives positive department review

One of Clare’s largest primary schools has come in for praise following a report by the Department of Education.

Inspectors say staff at St. Senan’s National School in Kilrush have made great inroads in improving learning standards of it’s students, but raised concerns about the school building itself.

St. Senan’s National School has 280 pupils and 12 teachers and is included in Band 2 of DEIS, the Department’s action plan for educational inclusion.

Inspecting the school last October, officials praised the school’s principal and found that very good progress has been made in improving pupils’ literacy and numeracy through targetted initiatives.

Particular praise was also given for ‘very high quality work in promoting… the participation of pupils with special educational needs.’

The school was urged to emphasize the development of pupils’ ooral language skills in English and Irish, however, while the report also states that ‘the overall quality of school accommodation is in need of significant improvement’.

In response, the board of management at St. Senan’s says it’s already acting on the findings.
