Clare Psychiatrist Concerned Over Lack Of Resources To Tackle Tsunami Of Mental Health Issues

A Clare psychiatrist insists sufficient resources are still not being provided to deal with the tsunami of mental health issues that have arisen during the pandemic.

Dr. John Hillery, who’s a member of the Mental Health Commission, is deeply concerned that the historically low level of government financing for mental health services coupled with increasing demands in the wider healthcare system is creating difficulties for people in the frontline.

A recent survey from the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland finds that along with surging referral and relapse numbers, psychiatrists are also reporting increasingly unrealistic workloads.

Dr. Hillery says the base was low pre-Covid in terms of investment in our mental health services.
