Clare Public Representatives Slam Plans For Third Runway In Dublin

Public representatives in Clare have come out in force to oppose the building of a third runway and terminal at Dublin Airport.

There are calls for the region's Oireachtas members to resist the plan, and instead lobby for Shannon Airport to be used to relieve the country's air congestion problems.

The building of a third runway and terminal in Dublin is being considered as part of review of congestion at the country's largest airport.

Planning permission has already been granted for the runway, and Transport Minister Shane Ross is to begin public consultation with residents ahead of the expected beginning of construction early next year.

However, ex-Labour TD Michael McNamara insists that the second runway at Shannon Airport should instead be used to relieve pressure on Dublin.

Clare Councillors have also come out against the plans for Dublin.

Former Cathaoirleach James Breen says it's up to Oireachtas representatives right across the region to oppose them.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fail's Clare Colleran Molloy is calling for investment in the region to ensure Shannon Airport can expand.
