Clare Senator Fears Lack Of Action on Shannon Airport Report

A Clare Senator believes a report on whether the US Military's use of Shannon Airport constitutes a breach of Ireland's neutrality will end up gathering dust.

A referendum could be held to enshrine Ireland's neutrality in the constitution, following an investigation by a cross-party Oireachtas Justice Committee.

The report will be published before the Dáil dissolves this week.

A cross-party Oireachtas Justice Committee has interviewed senior Ministers, anti-war protestors and academic experts and even visited Shannon as part of their investigation into the US military's use of the Airport.

They're publishing a report which calls for a debate on the issue within the Dáil and Seanad while a referendum could be held to enshrine Ireland's neutrality into the constitution.

The committee's report was signed off on by it's cross-party membership and will be published ahead of the Dáil being dissolved this week.

But Shannon Fine Gael Senator Tony Mulcahy, who is also a member of the committee isn't convinced a referendum will happen.

Anti-war group Shannonwatch had submitted a petition which led to this report.

They say they would welcome a referendum on the issue.

Dr John Lannon says the only way to ensure Ireland implements policies of neutrality, is to enshrine it on the constitution.
