Clare Senator Strongly Criticises Tánaiste’s Christmas Travel Remarks

Clare’s Green Party Senator has strongly criticised the Tánaiste for advising people not to book flights home for Christmas at the moment.

Leo Varadkar made the comments as we reached the halfway point in level five restrictions, which were echoed by the Chief Medical Officer.

Senator Roisín Garvey says his comment “frightened” people.

Leo Varadkar’s message in the Dáil yesterday, regarding flights home for Christmas, was clear.

His remarks were later backed up by the Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan, who said international travel will be one of the biggest Covid 19 risks in the run-up to Christmas.

Today, however, one of Clare’s government representatives has criticised the Tanaiste’s remarks.

Inagh-based Green Party Senator Roisin Garvey says Leo Varadkar frightened people with what he said.

Public health experts say we’re on track to be able to spend Christmas Day with our families – but that large family gatherings and office parties will not be allowed.

Level 5 restrictions have driven the ‘R’ number down to 0.6, with Clare’s 14 day incidence rate now standing at 109.4 per 100,000 – below the falling national average of 135.3.

Member of NPHET Dr Colm Henry says we’re on the right track to exit level 5.
