Corofin native Tony Killeen, who retired from politics ahead of this year’s general election, was paid 16,666.70 euro as part of his Public Representation Allowance

However, the former Defence Minister opted to return a large portion of this, giving him a revised total of 10,000 euro exactly.

This does not include separate expenses incurred as part of his ministerial duties.

In all, 32 TDs opted to return funds totalling over 120,000 euro – it’ reported this action was taken because the representatives in question simply hadn’t spent all the money they were given.

The figures, published on the Oireachtas website, outline all expenses and allowance payments made to TDs from March to December of last year, when a new expenses system came into effect.

Of the Clare TDs, Fine Gael’s Joe Carey and Pat Breen were each paid almost 50,500 euro, while their Fianna Fail counterpart Timmy Dooley was paid just under 50,000.

All of these expenses were vouched.
