Clare TD’s Respond to Dooradoyle HIQA Review

The government will respond to a HIQA report which slammed facilities at the MidWest's Main Hospital later today.

The damning document, issued by the health watchdog last week, found that the Emergency Department at Dooradoyle was not fit for purpose, will be discussed in the Dáil later today.

It comes as Clare government TDs say the report could spur significant change here.

Clare County Council have already demanded the restoration of A&E care to Ennis General, in light of the HIQA report which raised concerns about delays and overcrowding at Dooradoyle.

Today though, that move was discussed as a strong possibility by the county's Fine Gael TDs, in their first comments since the document was published on Friday.

Deputy Pat Breen says the UL Hospitals Group is the only such grouping which does not have a level 3 hospital, a role which would include 24-hour A&E care and one that he would like to see fulfilled by Ennis.

While both Deputy Breen and his party colleague Joe Carey say the report could also prompt increased investment at Dooradoyle, aimed at fast-tracking the completion of it's new Emergency Unit.

It has nearly been built, but the process of fitting it out won't be complete until late 2016, a date that Deputy Carey would like to see brought forward.

Clare's Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley has backed these calls, but says it's up to James Reilly to ensure they occur.

He wants the typical tendering process to be by-passed so that the works can be prioritised.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health is set to outline it's reponse to HIQA's findings in the Dáil later today.

Five Fine Gael and Labour TDs from the MidWest are to demand answers, and it's possible that it is Minister James Reilly who will be on hand to answer them.
