The Mayor of Clare hopes the number of new Garda recruits will exceed the number of retirements in the force next year.
The comments from Fine Gael Councillor Joe Arkins come following the Justice Minister’s announcement that the first recruitment of Gardaí in more than five years will take in 2014.

Minister Shatter didn’t give a specific number of how many places will be offered to applicants, saying that a calculation of retirements would be made to ensure the number of Gardai doesn’t fall below 13,000.
