Clare Welcome To US Beef Breakthrough

There's been a broad welcome from farming organisations to the announcement that Irish beef has been approved for sale in the US for the first time in more than 15 years.

The embargo – which was introduced over BSE fears – was only lifted last March – and Ireland will be the first EU member state to benefit.

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney says his Department will announce a number of schemes to capitalise on the development, while one Clare farming representative feels we need to be ambitious.

Cratloe's Eddie Punch, General Secretary of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers' Association, says the development is very welcome and called on Ireland to be "ambitious" in order to exploit it to its fullest potential.
