The Shannon-based Vice President of Active Retirement Ireland says the holiday season can be a lonely time for those in their golden years, particularly those living on their own.

Kay Murphy says feelings of isolation or despair are often experienced and she's urging those with older relatives or neighbours to check in, not just over the Christmas, but into the new year, when visitors become few and far between.

Kay says it's important to reach out to people when you're living alone.
