Clare’s housing budget slashed by nearly a third

Almost eight million Euro has been cut from the housing budgets of Clare’s local authorities in 2010.

Clare County Council and the Town Councils of Ennis and Kilrush have been given almost 17 million Euro worth of funds for their programs, though last year they shared 24.7 million.

Clare County Council’s grant is down by 6 million Euro, with the bulk of these funds coming from the portion of the budget used to construct new dwellings.

Ennis Town Council has seen their grant almost halve to 2.65 million, though the grant for Kilrush Council is up by 400 thousand Euro to 1.17 million.

As well as building new homes, the money will be used on other schemes such as the retrofitting of energy measures.

Clare County Council’s allocation also includes 1.9m Euro for traveller accommodation –  a higher figure than Galway or Limerick – while 2 million Euro has been given to the rental accommodation scheme, to assist those in need of long-term housing
