Clarity Sought On Treatment Of Private Healthcare Patients

The Dáil has heard that a Clareman who has “advanced cancer” has seen vital surgery delayed because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Fianna Fáil’s Cathal Crowe raised the case in the Dáil last evening, outlining how the man – who has private health insurance – saw his surgery cancelled.

He has now been referred to the public waiting list instead, prolonging his wait for treatment.

As part of the State’s response to COVID-19, the Department of Health struck a deal to takeover 19 private hospitals in order to boost bed capacity, but Deputy Crowe but many beds are now lying empty in those facilities.

Deputy Crowe says the situation needs to be addressed.
