Clean-Up Operation Underway In Ennis Following Storm Desmond

A clean-up operation is underway in Ennis today after water seeped through flood defences in the Abbey street area overnight.

Homes and businesses were under nine inches of water this morning as Clare Fm's Fiona Cahill reports:

The sound of water pumps as residents and businesses attempt to clear flood water today.

People in the area say the problems started yesterday evening as water from the fast-flowing River Fergus began to rise and seep through gaps in the walls.

Around half past ten last night, Members of Clare County Fire Service were called in to pump water from Bindon Street but residents and businesses in the Abbey Street area say that for them, the worst of the flooding happened overnight.

Clare County Council provided homes and businesses with sandbags but Paddy Comer, who lives alongside the river on Abbey Street, says that didn't stop the water from coming into his home.

Extensive work has been carried out providing increased flood defences in the county town in recent years but Brain O'Neill of The Rowan Tree says that for some, particularly around the Abbey Street area, the flood defences haven't worked.

A number of roads across the county town remain under water today including parts of Tobairtaoscáin, the Gort Road, Dún na hInse and Cloughleigh.

Water levels have risen significantly overnight in the Edenvale catchment area which impacts on the St Flannan's College and Clare Road area of Ennis.

Senior Engineer with Clare County Council Tom Tiernan says the situation there is being monitored.
