Cliffs of Moher staff on strike

Striking workers at the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre are picketing the site today following failure to reach agreement over pay.

SIPTU members were balloted on the revised deal in their ongoing dispute which centres on a Labour Court recommended equal pay deal with other local authority workers as the centre is operated by Clare County Council.

Management at the cliffs say the cost of the ruling would result in job losses but made an amended offer to workers, including higher pay for Sundays and bank holidays, however staff rejected the deal by a majority of 15 to 2.

As strike action gets underway  – Cliffs of Moher Director Ger Dollard says a contingency plan is in place to make sure it’s business as usual for visiting tourists

Today’s strike at the Cliffs of Moher comes at the height of the tourist season in Clare, and already tomorrow’s planned visit by Republic of Ireland Soccer Manager Giovanni Trapattoni and FAI delegates has been moved to Ennistymon to avoid the disruption.

But SIPTU’s Tony Kenny says the strike could have easily been avoided
