College President defends plagarism procedure

The President of IT Tralee has defended the procedures used to investigate the thesis of it’s chairman Flan Garvey.

The former Mayor of Clare was subject of an academic inquiry after 26 members of staff at the Kerry college signed a letter accusing him of plagiarising part of his dissertation on the history of his native parish Inagh/Kilnamona.

The case was investigated by an independent panel, whose report Mr. Garvey appealed to the college’s Examinations and Assessments Appeals Committee.  This group, which contained some IT Tralee staff, found his thesis did contain plagiarism, but that this was not intentional.

President of IT Tralee, Dr Oliver Murphy insists the investigation was comprehensive and independent.
