Gardaí are expected to charge or release a man being held over the murder of Ennis student Eoin Ryan, by this evening.
He was arrested shortly after the body of the 21 year old was discovered in a barrel in a field at Cappabeg near Barefield yesterday morning – post-mortem results revealed he sustained head injuries.
A man in his thirties was arrested near the scene and is being quizzed at Ennis Garda Station. His period of detention of 12 hours was extended overnight and the suspect can be held until this evening.
Gardaí were alerted to the possibility that the body in Cappabeg might be Mr Ryan’s after his father contacted Ennis Garda station yesterday morning to report his son did not return home on Monday night.
Following an appeal on Clare FM by Superintendent Peter Duff, a taxi driver also came forward to say that he took a fare from two men travelling from Ennis to the Cappabeg area in the early hours of Tuesday.
Eoin Ryan is survived by his parents- Don Ryan a former president of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland, his mother Phill, and a brother and a sister.
The 21 year old law student was also the nephew through marraige of Mayor of Clare, Christy Curtin and West Clare Councillor PJ Kelly.
The brutal murder has shocked the communities of both Ennis and Barefield who are struggling to come to terms with the violent death.
