Concerns have been expressed that Clare’s water infrastructure could fall into private hands, under plans to nationalise the delivery of water.
The government is exploring the sale of Bord Gais Energy, one of the main divisions of Bord Gais which is to take control of Ireland’s water via a newly-created subsidiary – Uisce Eireann
Plans for this Irish Water body have been debated by Clare County Councillors who have raised a number of concerns relating to staff, consumers and the company itself.
While the government insists Ireland’s water infrastructure will remain in public ownership, West Clare Fianna Fail Councillor PJ Kelly fears the coalition could come under pressure to change this policy.
