The numbers of people employed at Clare County Council have fallen by about 20 per cent in the past five years.

The issue was raised at the most recent meeting of the council and public representatives were told concerns are high on the issue.

At the end of 2008 1,052 staff worked for the authority – that number has now decreased to 849 on February 28th last.

Further retirements are expected to impact on this in the coming weeks.

To date 120  outdoor staff, 56 clerical and 19 professional or technical have retired.

Director of service Ger Dollard says the council is working to do more with less – but that they would invest in staff once the recruitment embargo is lifted.
