Concerns raised over possible rezoning to allow private hospital development

Plans for a 60 million euro private hospital development in Ennis with the creation of hundreds of jobs looks set to get the go ahead.

Clare County Council has indicated that its considering to grant planning permission for the 100 bed facility at Shanavogh, however the site is currently zoned as residential and the local authority is seeking to alter the controversial Ennis and Environs plans to rezone the land.

The proposed development originally consisted of a five story ,140 bed facility but this has been since amended to a four storey building with up to a hundred inpatient, cardiology and day surgery beds.

The developers say up to a 150 jobs will be created during construction and a further 3 to 4 hundred permanent positions once completed.

Councillors are expected to vote in September on whether the site at Shanavogh should be rezoned to allow planning permission, but Green Party Councillor Brian Meaney believes the development plan shouldn’t be altered

The owner of a Ennis site currently designated to allow a hospital development says he’s at a loss as to why Clare County Council would consider re-zoning another site to facilitate such a project.

The Local authority has issued a notice of a material contravention of the Ennis and Environs plan which would clear the way for planning permission for a 100 bed private hospital at Shanavogh.

The location is currently zoned as residential and if passed by councillors the material contravention would change it to ‘community’

There are a number of objectors to the project including local residents and health care facilities while Shane Flanagan owner of another Ennis site already zoned for hospital development wants local representatives to reject the current proposals.
