Concerns Raised Over Staffing Levels And Management Of Medicine At Clare Nursing Home

Concerns have been raised over staffing levels and the management of medicines at a West Clare nursing home.

A number of issues have come to light in a HIQA report published following an unannounced inspection at Kilrush Nursing Home in November.

A HIQA inspector visited the Mowlam Healthcare Services-operated Kilrush Nursing Home on November 12th last as part of a programme of focussed inspections relating to the management of medicine.

On arrival, the inspector found that there were "inadequate arrangements" in place for the management of the centre, in the absence of the person in charge.

There was only one registered nurse on duty but the clinical nurse did attend during the course of the inspection.

When it came to the management of medicine, the facility was found to be at the level of “major noncompliance” with “unsafe medicines management practices” observed by the inspector.

A number of residents hadn’t received their medicine as prescribed and documentation was found to be incomplete.

A number of actions were recommended by the inspectors, and the report outlines how action to address this has been taken by operators.
