Conviction concerns after unregistered nurse discovered at sexual assault treatment unit

There’s concerns over the cases of 25 people who were examined at the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit at Letterkenny General Hospital.

It’s emerged a nurse working at the unit was not registered with the nursing board, An Bord Altranais.

The administrative blunder could potentially affect the outcome of the cases that the nurse was involved in.

All nurses working here are required to register with An Bord Altranais.

The nurse at the centre of this controversy was removed from that register in 2009 for non payment of fees.

The HSE says it was aware of that at the time – and put the information in the "system".

However that information never filtered down to where the nurse was working at the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit at Letterkenny General Hospital.

The administrative blunder was only spotted during routine checks in recent weeks and the HSE says the nurse is no longer on duty.

Gardaí and HSE have had to contact 25 people who were treated at the unit in the last 18 months and there’s now fears forensic evidence gathered may not be admissible in court.

The matter has been brought to the attention of the Health Minister, the Justice Minister, the Attorney General as well as the DPP.

The HSE says it’s appointed two independent experts to carry out a review into the matter.

It also says its satisfied that all nurses working at other units across the country are "actively registered".
